Location: The Heritage Foundation's Allison Auditorium In the run-up to the NATO Summit in Bucharest in early April, several questions have been raised about the NATO role in Afghanistan and how to maintain the organization’s effectiveness amidst waning European public support for the overall mission in Afghanistan. How can NATO better inform the public about the importance of defeating al-Qaeda and its Taliban allies in Afghanistan to ensure that the world is safer from global terrorism? How might NATO adjust its overall strategy and knit up more effectively the contributions by the different NATO members to enhance the success of the Afghanistan mission? Shortly after the NATO summit, Washington will again turn its attention to Iraq. General David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker both are scheduled to testify before Congress to deliver their latest assessments of the progress made in Iraq on the security, diplomatic, and political fronts. Panelists will provide their own assessments of the current security situation in Iraq, evaluate how the surge strategy adopted last year has affected the prospects for stabilizing Iraq and make policy recommendations for Iraq after the surge.
